September 25, 2017 addendum: Just discovered Edward Steichen’s 1932 photo of the Empire State Building. Scroll down to Modernist section to read what Steichen said about the image.
Both, but especially the second image, are outstanding.

Great mashups of a great building

Thanks John. One of the things that struck me while taking these photos is how short the older skyscrapers are compared to the new ones built in the last few years that are 80+ stories tall. The Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle, the Seagram Building on Park, and countless other iconic buildings seem like 6-floor walk-ups in comparison.

Love this piling up of grids, and the subtle colors.

Thanks Linda. I thought there was some potential in these buildings although I had to shelve my original idea almost immediately once I started to assemble the different images.

Oh, these make me smile. What I like (besides that they are just so darn good) is the respect that comes through for the architecture. I think that’s what made me smile – I know you care about these places (as I and so many others do). It shows.

Thanks Lynn. While one can appreciate the cumulative effect of such tall buildings, many of them, I find, are not particularly distinguished architecturally.
