There was a song back in the early 90’s by American band Belly. It was called Feed The Tree. The song is about commitment and respect and “gone to feed the tree” is a metaphor for dying. I think it is a great saying and one which your photograph reminded me off. I like the idea that someone has gone to feed the tree as a way of talking about death. It hooks into all those things about cycle of life and ecosystems and is a different and perhaps positive way of considering the inevitable in all our lives. I don’t know if it is simply a line from the Belly song or if feeding the tree is a reference to an old American saying? It stayed with me after hearing that song many years ago…

Thanks Mr C for adding a deeper perspective and way to look at this photo. I had called it “Subdivision” — but WordPress, for a reason I’ll never understand, sometimes omits titles. “Feed the Tree” is a thousand times better though, and I’ll try using it when I post more cemetery photos after the holiday. It’s a striking phrase, for sure.
