Tuesday, December 26, 2017: Feed the Tree Edition

From the song, Feed the Tree. Lyrics by Tanya Donelly
This old man I’ve talked about
Broke his own heart,
Poured it in the ground
Big red tree grew up and out,
Throws up its leaves,
Spins round and round.
I know all this and more
So take your hat off
When you’re talking to me
And be there when I feed the tree.
With thanks to Mr. C of Postcard Cafe
What a fine set of images.
I obviously approve of the theme :-)
Individually I like each image. Upon first viewing of the gallery the Lichen Graveyard caught my eye. It has the qualities of a painting and feels almost intimate and personal. The light in the image also lends to something perhaps optimistically reflective.
Your gallery of images were the first thing I looked at as I sat down at my computer and with so much to take in have made a great start to my day. (I was almost tempted to say they had made a grave start to my day :-)
I now also have some images planted in my mind to accompany the song.
Thanks and best wishes
Mr C
PS I your gallery of images also reminded me of another song which I’m tempted to share with you. This time, The Light Will Stay On by The Walkabouts. It is a beautiful and wonderfully hauntingly song. Enjoy…
“…and if you bury me at three feet two
one for your sorrow
two for your sweat
and three for the strange things we never forget
And long after we’re gone
The light will stay on
The light will stay on
And long after we’re safe
The lights will not fade
The lights will not fade…”

Thanks Mr. C. It’s great that these images got your day off to a good start despite their subject matter. Not everyone would have that kind of understanding.
Thanks too for the Walkabouts link and lyrics. Have to confess that I enjoyed them more than Belly’s video which almost gave me an attack of dizziness :)
Still love the phrase, Feed the Tree, though.

I just found the image I posted in 2015 using the title of the Walkabouts song:

This is a wonderful wonderful collection, Alan. “The Forgotten” seems as if it’s a view seen through tears. “Lichen Graveyard” is just plain beautiful—the colors going a long way in making it so, though of course it’s the mashup that makes it artful. The marks on the tombstone in “Here Lies” (forgive me if I’m subverting your intention—I don’t see “Trump” in your tags) look like hash marks counting the lies. Your isolation of Nettie’s name in “Rusting Railing_1895” (a lovely composition) makes me feel sad about her. Altogether, I find this a spectacular group.

Thank you Linda for adding to my own appreciation of my photos.
It’s fun comparing your responses to my conscious intentions and motivation which were much more superficial. I used a blurred effect in “The Forgotten” because the light level was low and required a slow exposure. Without a tripod, I had no other choice. I had a sense of the mood it might evoke but that came afterwards, not before, and only when I combined it with a slightly different image taken a few feet more to one side.
“Lichen Graveyard” is pretty much the same scene taken with less blur and combined with a close-up of lichen on a gravestone.
In “Rusting Railing,” I was originally drawn to the multiple browns and grays and didn’t consider “Nettie” to be all that important. I was actually disappointed with the image once I saw it on my computer, but cropping out almost the entire right half saved the day.
As for “Here Lies,” I’ve already made my statement about Trump’s dishonesty on another of my blogs (https://studioagitprop.wordpress.com/2017/02/01/sign-of-the-times/)

I have to agree with Linda – a spectacular group of images. I’m particularly fond of Lichen Graveyard but they each have an interesting and mysterious quality that I like. Nice worm, Alan.

Gee, thanks Ken. No one’s ever referred to my photography before as “nice worm.”

LOL. You know it actually took me about two hours before I suddenly realized what the typo was. Duh! Before then I wasn’t sure if it was perhaps some jokey play on the organisms that assist in the decomposition of corpses.
Just hope you weren’t driving too Ken.

Actually, I wasn’t driving (or even in a car) at all, Alan. But I thought it was a good excuse for my blunder, so I went with it. Fake news.

This time I don’t feel bad about being late to the party, because I get to read all the entertaining comments that went before. It’s a very good series. Coupled with the lyrics, “Feed the Trees” is great. The Lichen Cemetery, the Cemetery Tree and the Fragmented Tree are standouts for me, and the second one, with that “Nettie” peaking through – that’s wonderful. Such a subtle, discerning eye you have! Nice worm!

Thanks. I think you’ve identified a new meme, courtesy of Ken.
The start of an inside joke?
