I second what Ken says and add that this Mark Strand line from his poem “Black Maps” has long been a favorite of mine. I find it particularly apropos to photography.
I have to laugh Linda: While packing for my move, I came across this art I created that had the line pictured here. I had zero recollection of where it originated and just assumed I had channeled some deep voice of wisdom in coming up with it. Now, thanks to you, I discover that it wasn’t my doing after all :)
Only wish I knew how I ever came in contact with Strand’s poem. It doesn’t strike a familiar chord with me at all.
Never thought about it in photographic terms until you mentioned it but I agree — it does have a striking relevance to our medium.
Well, I just learned something too – I don’t know that quote. I love the way it brings together time and space. These days it’s not particularly fashionable to honor one’s parents like this, which makes it even more touching, I think.
This is a wonderful image, Alan. And a nice tribute to your dad.
