Thanks Lynn. The original image of the man on the scooter doesn’t begin to capture as well as this one does what some of these guys actually look like protected against both the weather and traffic accidents. Crossing a bike lane on foot in mid-town Manhattan felt like dodging escapees from Mortal Kombat. (Wish I could make that into a video game :)
That’s funny – so you made him more himself than he was.
When I moved out here and was spending time in Seattle I couldn’t believe how law-abiding everyone was. I’d always crossed when there were no cars, not when the light says cross. I quickly learned in NY to pay attention to what’s happening around you and then seize the moment. Not the way it’s done here!
My younger brother was a bike messenger for years and had his share of accidents but he loved the rush he got from whizzing south on Sixth Ave., for example. He reportedly got in the zone that way.
But bike lanes have changed the game of crossing the street in NY, haven’t they? And they’ve changed the game for the messengers.
Having biked in NYC only a few years ago, I think the bike lanes are great. But pedestrians definitely have more to contend with now when crossing the street.
Are you sure that sedan is gray? ;-) Nice rest stop! And the man on the scooter – wow, very nice!
