Robert Markey, mosaic artist

The bright colors in this mosaic are reflections of a nearby wall mural. The artwork itself consists of mirrored pieces of glass: Thus, its appearance will vary throughout the day, depending as well on the angle from which it is viewed.

Wednesday, February 12, 2020: Close-Up on Seuss

The photos below were taken during a drizzly afternoon at the Springfield Museum’s Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden. This enchanting public art installation, featuring Dr. Seuss’s most beloved characters, is the work of artist Lark Grey Dimond-Cates who is also Theodor Geisel’s step-daughter. Horton the Elephant, the subject of all but one close-up, was not harmed during the photography session. With special thanks to artist Robert Markey whose glass mosaic figures adorn Springfield’s Dwight Street railroad overpass (as well as other walls throughout the city) and form the basis of this inverted composite. More of his work can be found on his website here.

Friday, May 6, 2016: Marion Royael Gallery Shout Out

The Marion Royael Gallery in Beacon, NY is a world of its own. Instead of the usual white walls and spare exhibits, one is treated to an exuberant display of two and three-dimensional art that seems like nothing else but the artistic sensibility of owners Barbara and Steve Riddle brought to pulsating life.

In the outdoor space in back, they’ve created another world, called Mr. Yard, whose orbit is even further removed from art show conventions. The mash-ups below, consisting of details from that environment, can only hint at the experience that awaits a visitor. If you’re ever in the area, be sure to check it out.
