Friday, December 6, 2013: Chanukah Recap Edition

This year, finding myself without a menorah, I decided to make a new one for each night of the holiday out of mostly recycled materials that were lying around the house. Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, celebrates an ancient miracle that occurred when the Second Temple was rededicated: a small cruse of oil for the ritual candelabrum lasted eight days instead of one, thereby allowing enough time to replenish the nearly exhausted supply.

For me, the modern miracle lay in not burning the house down with my ecologically correct but doctrinally suspect — and entirely impractical  menorahs.
