Monday, January 29, 2024: Cherry Street Marketplace (Part Four of Four)

This is the final installment of a four-part series celebrating the Cherry Street Marketplace and Clay Market (its affiliated wholesale pottery business) in Seneca, SC.  Featured prominently in the mostly B&W images are sections of a huge shade-cloth awning that workmen were in the midst of raising while I was there. Bordering on the dark and dystopian, the photos are the polar opposite of what a visit to these garden-centered businesses is actually like. In fact, I can’t wait until the spring and summer when an entirely fresh set of imagery will emerge, no doubt, from all in bloom.

Monday, August 14, 2023: Central Roller Mills Edition (Part One)

Central Roller Mills, in the heart of Central, South Carolina, opened in 1903 as a manufacturing facility for flour, corn meal, and animal feed. It originally consisted of the three-story brick building seen in the middle of the first photo, along with a one-story wing. By 1938, under new ownership, the complex included the four-story bucket elevator tower on the left, nine storage silos (whose remains are shown in the following images), and additional structures. It is the only extant and intact roller mill in South Carolina and was listed on the National Registration of Historic Places in 2013. Efforts are currently underway to salvage at least some of the buildings for uses both old and new.

As much as I would like to see that effort succeed, I realize it would mark the demise of a very special photo subject.
