There’s something to like about each of these, especially your instincts for clever design. But the first is my favorite because of the way you’ve suggested other contexts from that of your subject. Besides those colors (which remind me the palette in any any number of El Greco paintings), the image is startling and slightly ominous.
Might just be me, but when I first saw it, I “read” it as a tombstone.
Thank you John. I hadn’t thought of the sign as tombstone-like but now that you mention it, I think you’re definitely on to something. Even the typeface lends itself to that perception.
Its faded colors and drippy vandalism — unlike how most other signs age — were something I couldn’t resist.
Rainy days on the courts! :-) Looks like it’s a good time to be there. The 3rd, 5th, 6th & 7th really appeal to me. The first – I also thought of a gravestone first. It’s so strange to me that someone would use that font – script – for that type of sign. The photo looked a bit too photoshopped for my taste at first glance, but I see you only increased the saturation. In the end I think I like the 3rd one the most – why do we need to say which we like most? – I like the way it combines the wavy tree reflections with the geometric, sharp lines – they work beautifully together.
Thanks Lynn. Yes, that font is indeed unusual for a sign of that nature. Must be an interesting back story so I’ll ask when I meet someone who might know.
